2020 became the record year for drug entry in Ecuador

2020 became the year in which the police seized the most drugs in the last decade.

The agents confiscated 128 tons of drugs and found seven clandestine clues of drug gangs. A part of the shipment was detected in ports and airports in the country where more than 23 tons of drugs were found. Hence, the authorities strengthen controls in these areas.

Last year, drug gangs brought more drugs into Ecuador with the intention of sending them to international markets.

According to the National Anti-Drug Investigation Directorate, the highest number of seizures before 2020 occurred in 2016 when in Ecuador 110 tons of the alkaloid were seized.

In 2020 there were 128 tons of drugs with which a new mark was reached. This shipment is valued at more than six billion dollars.

Giovanny Ponce, national director of Anti-Drug Investigation, said that more than 80% of the drug was for international trafficking.

Hence, the investigations in this 2021, to combat drug trafficking point to the analysis of the operations in these terminals.
