The electoral calendar, which sets February 7 as the date for the general elections, will not be affected after the ruling of the TCE Judge, Ángel Torres, who rules the dismissal and sanction of the president of the CNE, Diana Atamaint, and the councilors , Enrique Pita, José Cabrera and Luis Verdesoto.
Through a statement, the National Electoral Council declared that the electoral process is still underway, “despite the attempts to interfere in the 2021 General Elections.”
“We express to the country that the judgment of the first instance of Judge Ángel Torres does not alter the fulfillment of the calendar that is executed normally for the voting day of next February 7,” the electoral body clarified.
The letter details that the sentenced counselors will go to all legal instances against this ruling. They considered that the resolution “violates the democratic stability of Ecuador.”
On the afternoon of this Wednesday, January 6, the judge of the Electoral Contentious Court, Ángel Torres, resolved to dismiss Atamaint, Pita, Cabrera and Verdesoto, for having incurred in the very serious electoral offense typified in the Organic Electoral Law and Political Organizations, by not complying with the judgment of the Contentious Court in favor of the Social Justice movement.
In this way, a penalty equivalent to 70 basic salaries, the dismissal of their positions and the suspension of participation rights for four years were ordered. Sanctions that will be effective immediately after the execution of this judgment.
However, due to the fact that the sentence is of the first instance, the directors may appeal this decision and it will be the Plenary of the TCE that ratifies or annuls the dismissal.
