In 17 provinces of Ecuador the speed of the contagion of COVID-19 increased

With a cut to January 2, 2021, the Minister of Health, Juan Carlos Zevallos, reported that the transmission speed in 17 provinces has increased and in three there was a minimal decrease.

At the national level, he pointed out that it is worrying that the national average of positive cases went from 19% to 21%, that is, two points more between the week of December 20 to 26 and December 27 to January 2.

He warned that there is a percentage that practically doubled and reached 38% positivity in the provinces of the Sierra Central, in provinces such as Carchi, Cañar and Cotopaxi.

Regarding the occupation of hospital beds, from December 27 to January 1 of this year, the percentage has remained relatively stable, at 30% nationwide. While the occupancy of beds in Intensive Care Units (ICU) is 64% in the country.

However, he clarified that there are health centers that are at the limit. For example, the Guasmo Sur and Teodoro Maldonado Carbo hospitals, in Guayaquil, as well as the Enrique Garcés and the IESS del Sur, in Quito, are at 100% ICU occupancy. That is, there is no more space for patients who need intensive therapy for complications of the respiratory virus.

In addition, he indicated that, in the private centers in Quito, the Metropolitano and Los Valles hospitals are also 100% occupied.

With this increase, Zevallos pointed out that they will be reactivated, as happened in June and August 2020, the number of beds in hospitalization and ICU will increase according to the need of each hospital.

Regarding the vaccination process, Zevallos reiterated that there is still no exact date for the arrival of the 50 thousand doses, but clarified that they will be in January of this year. The minister added that for two months they have been working on the logistics for the arrival of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine and also with the payroll of hospital personnel that work with COVID-10 who will be the first to receive the vaccines.
