Japan: Authorities plan to issue a state of emergency for Tokyo and three prefectures

The Asian country registers more than 245.000 positive cases and its capital is the most affected area with 63.400 infections of Covid-19.

This Monday, January 4, 2021, the Prime Minister of Japan, Yoshihide Suga, confirmed that the national government is planning to declare a state of emergency in Tokyo and its surroundings, given the sustained increase in positive cases of Covid-19.

Suga commented that Japan would be preparing the massive vaccination against Covid-19, by the end of February. However, the state of emergency in Tokyo and three other prefectures will be real, because the positive cases of coronavirus in these areas show a rebound in recent days.

In addition to the capital, the affected areas would be the prefectures of: Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa. Japan would apply this measure again, after the country’s first lockdown in April.

This new state of alarm does not include the confinement of people. However, it allows local authorities to cancel mass events, close public spaces such as schools and shorten the opening hours in shops.

Japan reported more than 245.000 positive cases of Covid-19, with Tokyo being the most affected area with 63.400 patients. The Asian country also adds 3.632 deaths, due to the coronavirus.
