India: 5 killed in blaze at producer of COVID-19 vaccine

The Serum Institute of India is producing the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.

A strong fire was registered in the Serum Institute of India, the largest manufacturer of vaccines in the world, however, the production of these drugs would not have been affected, according to the authorities.

This Thursday, January 21, 2021, the Indian media showed how a strong fire was attacking the facilities of the Serum Institute of India. Millions of Covid-19 vaccines developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford are being produced here.

The fire occurred in a building under construction, according to the authorities, however, the death of 5 people who were found by rescue groups is recorded. Firefighters and policemen also managed to save other workers who were trapped.

Indian authorities confirmed that investigations will begin to determine the causes of this fire. On the other hand, the production of vaccines will remain the same, since it was not affected.
