Most of the detained communicators were arrested while covering demonstrations or events related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders raised their voices in protest at the huge number of journalists detained during 2020. Most communicators would be in jail for covering demonstrations and events related to the pandemic.
This 2020 has put more than 270 journalists in jail, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, which would be a record number. The countries where the most communicators have lost their freedom to do their job are: China, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Syria.
“At least 274 journalists were in prison as of December 1, the highest number since CPJ began collecting statistics in the early 1990s, and the fifth year in a row that there are at least 250 journalists in jail.” , dictates a statement from the CJP
The United States, Belarus and Ethiopia registered an increase in imprisoned communicators. The authorities of CJP and also of Reporters Without Borders remind the rulers that journalists have also been affected by the pandemic. At least 2 journalists died in prison after catching Covid-19.
