In a letter sent to the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, of the United States, 13 Democratic congressmen asked him to initiate an “urgent dialogue” with the Ecuadorian Government to guarantee “free and fair elections” on February 7, 2021.
They express their “deep concern over the deterioration of the situation of human rights and democracy” in Ecuador.
“We urge you to establish an urgent dialogue with the Government of (Lenín) Moreno to demand an end to these human rights violations and to insist on free, fair and inclusive elections in Ecuador,” the letter says.
They point out that there would be “dubious maneuvers to try to prevent opposition leaders from participating in the country’s elections.”
“Moreno and his allies also sought, through numerous highly questionable maneuvers, to keep their main political opponents off the ballot in the next elections in Ecuador,” the letter adds.
They criticized that there were attempts to “repress dissent, persecute political opponents and prevent the main opposition movement (led by Rafael Correa) from freely participating in the elections.”
