People who already had Covid are not part of the priority group to receive vaccines, announces the Minister of Health

The first vaccines will arrive in January and the mass vaccination will begin in March 2021.

The Minister of Health, Juan Carlos Zevallos, indicated that people who have already been infected with coronavirus will not be part of the priority group that will receive the first vaccines in Ecuador.

Zevallos announced that these people will be able to receive a vaccine, but they will have access to the drug when mass vaccination begins in Ecuador, which would take place in the first quarter of 2021 and would be carried out in 10.000 points nationwide.

“We have the obligation to prioritize who gets vaccinated first, that group does not include people who already had the virus, but they will enter later, with mass vaccination.”

In the same way, the Minister explained that, at the moment, there is no scientific evidence to ensure that the vaccines that will reach Ecuador from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer – BioNTech fight the new mutation of the coronavirus, but there is also no proven reason why they do not work.

On the other hand, Zevallos indicated that negotiations are already underway for the arrival of two other vaccines to the country. These would arrive in the first months of 2021 and would be from the Moderna and AstraZeneca pharmaceutical companies.

“Yesterday we had the first meeting to finalize the details of the importation of the Moderna vaccine and we sent a first payment to the pharmaceutical AstraZeneca and that the drugs arrive on time.”
