The 18 Ecuadorian crew members of a fishing boat that wrecked near the Galapagos are in Panama.
The rescued crew members are in good health and the authorities coordinate actions for their repatriation.
Through its social networks, the Embassy of Ecuador in Panama reported that the ship was wrecked “near Galapagos” and that an oil tanker rescued the 18 Ecuadorians.
The entity pointed out that conversations have been held with the National Aeronaval Service (Senan), for the priority attention of these people, as well as 18 emergency passports have been issued in favor of citizens so that they may possibly return to Ecuador this Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Senan announced that the 18 crew members were rescued 300 nautical miles north of Galapagos.
According to the Panamanian institution, bad weather and mechanical damage caused the shipwreck.
The captain of the ship “Romeo”, a man who identified himself as Victor, said in a video posted by the Senan on his social networks that the shipwreck occurred at least three days ago.
According to the captain of the boat, the breakdown of the machine added to the bad weather caused a wave to sink them.
The survivor indicated that they were adrift for at least 8 hours until a plane flying overhead spotted them, after which they were picked up by an oil tanker.
The captain added that they hope to get home soon.
