Government of Ecuador owes USD25 million to rural doctors

The rural doctors demand from the National Government the payment of bonds and decimations that it has not paid. These amounted to 25 million dollars until the previous month.

John Farfán, president of ANAMER (National Association of Rural Doctors), explained that the vouchers are an economic aid that these health professionals have so that they can work in places of difficult access, whose amount is 10% or 20% of the salary, depending on where they are.

He criticized that the Ministries of Health and Finance are not responsible even though the doctors presented a protection action, because they consider that their constitutional rights are violated.

He also questioned that the Ecuadorian government uses the money for other things and not for the three priority sectors as defined by the Constitution: health, justice and education.

Farfán warned that without the geographic bonus they will not be able to attend their workplaces, which are towns in which there is a single doctor for more than 800 people, who are at least five hours from a basic hospital.

The union leader deplored that the Government, to prevent people from taking action, what it does is pay a small percentage and the majority remains unpaid, but it dampens the general discontent.

Likewise, he rejected that rural doctors were not taken into account in the Humanitarian Support Law to receive the definitive appointment, for working during the pandemic, but that they will be given five extra points for when they participate in the merit and opposition contests. But there is not even a document that certifies it.
