Azuay cannot control the increase of COVID-19 cases

Azuay is the fourth province most affected by the coronavirus pandemic in the country, only behind Pichincha, Guayas and Manabí.

The province of Azuay shows a sustained increase in its infections, since the coronavirus health emergency began 8 months ago. The main hospitals in Cuenca report that their Intensive Care Units (ICU) are almost at the top.

Until Wednesday, November 4, 2020, Azuay registered 10.708 positive cases, making it the fourth most affected province in the country after Pichincha, Guayas and Manabí. However, several experts estimate that these figures reflect the reality of the province of the Sierra.

In Azuay, the statistics do not reflect the reality of positive cases, because, in this province, according to the authorities, 33 samples are being taken for every 1.000 people. In addition, the positive rate of the total samples taken is 40%, which makes it more contagious.

For health experts in Cuenca there is talk of a greater contagion in Pichincha, because in that province “PCR-RT tests have been focused.” Due to this situation, many people in Cuenca would be believing that “the explosion of the virus only continues in those provinces”, for which, they lower their guard against biosecurity measures.

Other problems that Azuay has to deal with is disrespect for distancing. According to the local ECU-911, during the entire emergency there have been more than 6.000 emergency calls due to crowds.

The authorities of the province have identified the critical points in the markets of the Libre El Arenal fair, Nueve de Octubre and 10 de Agosto. In these places, people do not respect the distance of two meters, others do not wear a mask and crowds of people at cultural events.

The ICUs of the José Carrasco Arteaga and Vicente Corral Moscoso hospitals confirmed that they continue to work almost to the limit. In total there are 111 hospitalized patients, of which 55 report a critical condition.
