Some of the most visited provinces during the Day of the Dead and Independence of Cuenca were: Azuay, Imbabura and Tungurahua.
400.000 people traveled to different parts of the country during the previous holiday for the Day of the Dead and Independence of Cuenca. The authorities estimate that the number of tourists registered was much lower than that of October, where the mobilization of more than 1 million people was estimated.
According to data from the Ministry of Tourism, some of the most visited provinces during the last 4-day holiday were: Azuay, Imbabura and Tungurahua. The institution considers that people chose short trips to places and also to rural areas.
The hotels reported a very low occupancy, Holbach Muñetón, president of the National Federation of the Chambers of Tourism (Fenacaptur), estimates that the low arrival at the hotels is attributed to the “closure of the beaches”
Muñetón considers that there were several confusion among tourists, about which places would be closed and which ones were open to the public, for which, “many decided not to travel.”
Among the most visited places during the last holiday is Baños de Agua Santa, where tourists helped to reactivate the economy of various sectors. Other sectors were the Cotopaxi National Park, the Quilotoa lagoon, the Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve and also the Palmira desert.
For its part, Cuenca, which celebrated its bicentennial, reported that its hotel capacity was occupied by more than 50%, which was higher than the October holiday. One of the most visited places in the city was the Inter-American Center for Popular Crafts and Arts (Cidap), where a long line formed at the entrance to see the creations of more than 60 artisans.
