Julian Assange says he and other inmates at Belmarsh prison have been placed into lockdown in their cells after being told there has been a Covid-19 outbreak in his block.
Stella Moris, Assange’s partner, declared that “Belmarsh is an extremely dangerous environment” and urged the British authorities to “change course before they make Julian lose his life.”
The Prison Service spokesman said “We have taken additional security measures after registering a number of positive Covid-19 cases,” while the press reported three infections in the block where Assange is located.
Representatives of the WikiLeaks founder ask that the prison director, all inmates and the prison staff undergo PCR testing. Similarly, all exercises were suspended and everyone was forbidden to shower, while food is now delivered to their cells.
Moris said “I am extremely concerned about Julian. Doctors say that he is vulnerable to the effects of the virus” adding that the problem is not only the risk of infection with Covid-19.
Last September, Michael Kopelman, psychiatrist and emeritus professor of neuropsychiatry at the King’s College University in London, warned in the British court that is processing the case of Julian Assange, that he may commit suicide if he is extradited to the United States.
Also in September, Stella Moris denounced Assange’s living conditions in prison:
“Each day Julian is woken at 5 am, handcuffed, put in holding cells, stripped naked, and x-rayed. He is transported 1.5 hours each way in what feels like a vertical coffin in a claustrophobic van,” Morris said.
