Former Secretary of Defense of Mexico is arrested for ties to drug trafficking

For the current Mexican president, Andrés López Obrador, the country’s previous regime was a “narco-government”

This Thursday, October 15, 2020, the Foreign Minister of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, confirmed that the Secretary of National Defense in the government of Enrique Peña Nieto between 2012 and 2018, Salvador Cienfuegos Cepeda, was detained at the Los Angeles airport.

The Mexican government confirmed that the arrest of Cienfuegos was due to a request from the Drug Control Agency (DEA). The former Mexican official is charged with five charges related to drug trafficking.

The current president of Mexico, Manuel López Obrador, considered that it is “regrettable” that the former secretary of security of the country is linked to drug trafficking cases.

Cienfuegos was arrested upon arrival in the United States, his family was also arrested, although he was later released. The case is directed by the Federal Court of New York, which is also investigating the former Secretary of Public Safety, Genaro García Luna.

The New York court was also the body that convicted the former leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

The Mexican authorities confirmed that former secretary Cienfuegos was not being investigated in his country for any crime. López Obrador emphasized that the previous government was a “narco-government” and a “mafia government.”
