Ecuador is still analyzing the issue due to measures that must be implemented in the matter of biosafety.
Until a mechanism is found to guarantee sanitary security measures, Ecuador prefers to keep its borders with Colombia and Peru closed.
The Minister of Government, María Paula Romo, indicated that we also depend on the decisions taken by neighboring countries, especially Peru, which has had a much longer duration of its pandemic and infections than ours.
Regarding Colombia, she said that the restrictions due to the pandemic have been extended much further than ours.
Last Saturday, Colombian President Iván Duque assured that his government is considering reopening its land border with Ecuador as of November 1, once it has been closed since March 18.
That day, Duque said that he had held previous conversations with his Ecuadorian counterpart Lenín Moreno to coordinate a reopening of the Rumichaca bridge.
He even pointed out that this week he hoped to have a teleconference with the Ecuadorian team to analyze this issue.
Despite this announcement, Romo pointed out that “there is no date for the opening yet”, but that it is being worked on.
One of the obstacles is a request from the Tulcán Emergency Operations Committee (COE), on the border with Colombia, which has asked that the closure be extended for another month.
The secretary of state said that this request is being considered because it seeks to prevent the spread of the virus.
Although Ecuador was one of the first countries in the region to open its air borders, with land borders it is more complicated to control biosecurity.
Despite the closure, it was clarified that commercial traffic has not been suspended, but regarding the transit of people, she maintained that it is still being analyzed what type of tests will be requested, as well as the symptoms that will be reviewed.
