Police repress peaceful protest by postgraduate doctors

“A few months ago we were heroes, now they treat us like criminals,” said one of the protesters

Receiving applause, postgraduate doctors – who were on the front line in the fight against COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic – now receive tear gas from riot police. The doctors carried out a peaceful protest demanding compliance with the Humanitarian Law, promoted by the Government itself.

“A few months ago we were heroes, now they treat us like criminals,” said one of the doctors who was affected by tear gas during the demonstration in Quito.

The protest was replicated in Cuenca and Guayaquil. “It has been 50 days since the Humanitarian Law has been approved and there are no results. It is a constant mockery of postgraduate doctors. We are also part of the health system ”, said another of those affected.

They demand immediate compliance with the Humanitarian Law in relation to the signing of contracts for occasional services and the assignments of accruing medical positions.

Since this Tuesday, about 3,500 postgraduate doctors, self-financed and scholarship recipients nationwide, began an indefinite stoppage of assistance activities until the health authorities address their claims.

So far, there is no response or statement from the Ministry of Health.
