The Army confirmed the fact in a press release, acknowledging the responsibility of one of its officers.
A young woman named Juliana Giraldo Díaz was killed this Thursday by an officer of the Colombian Army. He shot her in the head, while she was traveling in a vehicle with her husband along a highway in the municipality of Miranda, located in the department of Cauca, one of the most convulsive in the country.
The Colombian Army confirmed the event through a press release, acknowledging the place where the event occurred and the responsibility of one of its officers, belonging to the High Mountain Battalion number 8 José María Vezga, who was carrying out “military control of area, a woman was killed by a gunshot by a member of the Force, ”the text says.
The document issued by the Army’s Cauca Specific Command added that when the crime was known, the unit immediately reported the event to the “competent authorities” so that they could determine the circumstances of the murder.
The Army indicated that “the military unit will remain attentive to judicial requirements, while making available the uniformed man allegedly involved in the unfortunate event, with the purpose of supporting the development of the investigation,” the statement said.
In social networks the husband of the 38-year-old victim denounced the crime. “Please help me make this video viral, the Army has just killed my wife, help me spread it,” he said.
The recording shows him next to the white car he was driving and in the front seat of which Giraldo’s lifeless body appears, near a point called Guatemala, in the municipality of Miranda.
In another video broadcast, the cries of the man are heard saying:
“They killed Juliana, that ‘man’ shot him in the head,” pointing to some soldiers and wondering why they did it if “we don’t carry weapons, we don’t carry drugs, we don’t carry anything.”
For its part, the Valle del Cauca Regional Indigenous Organization repudiated the assassination.
“The Army has just murdered a young woman in Miranda (Cauca) in cold blood and in a defenseless state. The national and international community must mobilize now!”
Senator Gustavo Petro also spoke out about what happened and published on his official profile on the social network Twitter: “New murder committed by the Defense Minister’s forces. An unarmed woman on the Miranda, Cauca highway.”
On the other hand, the head of state, Iván Duque, repudiated the event; while the Defense Minister, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, explained that the personnel involved “will be separated from their functions and has been placed at the disposal of the competent authorities for the actions that correspond by law”
The murder of Juliana Giraldo Díaz occurs at a time of high tension in Colombia due to the abuses and excess violence of members of the Police in the protests, carried out by the citizens in repudiation of the murder of the law student Javier Ordóñez.
