The group of US congressmen denounced that the OAS was quick to recognize the de facto government led by Jeanine Áñez.
A group of 28 US congressmen made up of Senator Bernie Sanders and 27 members of the House of Representatives, requested this Monday before the Secretary of State of the United States (USA), Mike Pompeo, to carry out an investigation into the role of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the Bolivian elections of 2019.
“We are deeply concerned about the lack of accountability and transparency regarding the role of the OAS in last year’s electoral and political crisis in Bolivia,” the aforementioned document begins.
The statement highlights that “the Secretary General of the OAS Luís Almagro hastened to recognize the unelected president, Jeanine Añez and not to speak of the deterioration of Human Rights (HR) and the persecution of political opponents who have taken place under his Government ”.
At the same time, the US parliamentarians denounced that, after the coup, several media outlets suffered persecution, while social leaders have been arrested and “military forces have been deployed against non-violent demonstrations.”
“It is necessary to immediately conduct a complete and independent review of the OAS statements and reports on the Bolivian elections in 2019,” the document concludes.
For his part, the former Bolivian president, Evo Morales, greeted the initiative of the congressmen from his Twitter account. “The world knows that the only fraud was perpetrated by the OAS,” Morales added in that message.
Bolivia will experience the holding of general elections on October 18 in which, according to polls, the presidential candidate for the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS), Luis Arce, has the best chances of winning.
