Candidates must submit declarations of not having money in tax havens to participate in elections

Another statement that must be included is the place and time of residence in a specific territorial jurisdiction.

Counselor Luis Verdesoto reported that around 4,280 candidates for all dignities will participate in the electoral process for 2021, all of them must register with the National Electoral Council either through the online system or in person, until October 7 .

As established in the Code of Democracy, all those who aspire to public office must submit two sworn statements, as part of the requirements for registration:

  • The one that guarantees that the candidate is not subject to the prohibitions that arose in the Popular Consultation of February 19, 2017 and that refers to the prohibition of having property or capital, of any nature, in tax havens.
  • And another where is the place and time of residence in a specific territorial jurisdiction. This change was approved in the legal reforms that came into effect for the 2021 elections.

The president of the CNE, Diana Atamaint, explained that all the documentation entered by the legal representative of each movement at the time of registration will be analyzed by a legal team that will prepare a report, which must be qualified by the full body to resolve whether a candidacy goes or not.
