Political and legal actors have questioned the urgency with which the process was concluded and the sentence was issued.
A court of cassation of the National Court of Justice (CNJ) of Ecuador issued a ruling on Monday that definitively annuls the possibility of the candidacy of former president Rafael Correa for the country’s vice presidency
“This is a montage made by Diana Salazar, the prosecutor appointed by Trujillo to persecute us,” said former President Rafael Correa
The Court’s ruling against the former president and more than 21 Ecuadorian officials also ratifies an eight-year prison sentence for the former vice president, Jorge Glas, for his alleged participation for aggravated bribery in the process called the Bribery case during the years 2012 and 2016.
With two votes in favor and one against, the judgment of the cassation court definitively disqualifies the former head of state from registering for the candidacy for vice-presidency by the Citizen Revolution movement, in alliance with the Democratic Center party.
The ruling also establishes a 21-year political ban for Correa, as indicated by the National Organic Code of Ecuador, which means that the former president is unable to exercise his political rights during that period of time.
Political and legal actors have questioned the urgency with which the process was concluded and the sentence was issued, in less than a year when other cassation processes in the country have lasted up to 20 years, such as the one that continues for embezzlement against the former Ecuadorian president , Jorge Jamil Mahuad.
Faced with the decision of the Court, the reactions have not been made wait, including that of Rafael Correa himself, who has published on his profile on the social network Twitter: “They finally succeeded. In record time they issued a“ final ”sentence to disqualify me as candidate, “he wrote.
“They do not understand that the only thing they are doing is increasing popular support. I will be fine. Give all your solidarity to those persecuted there. Remember: the only thing they condemn us to is to win,” added the former president of Ecuador.
