The National Federation of Secondary Students demands an increase in the education budget.

The National Federation of Secondary Students (Fenaes) of Paraguay called on its members to support with permanent mobilization the struggle to achieve greater investment in education.

Through a statement, Fenaes explained its determination that “currently Paraguay is among the countries with less investment in education at the regional level”, and that these “terrible training conditions” affect “a low level of learning “, denounced the organization.

The students demand a budget increase for education, which represents 3.7 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), up to the 7 percent recommended by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco , acronym in English) to finance the activity.

In addition, they demand to increase the budget of the free fund (items that the Government sends to public educational institutions), to establish its own fund for school meals and another to equip technical schools, as well as a fund to improve the educational process with the introduction of modern computer technologies.

The students explain that they had previously presented these demands for an increase in investment to the Ministry of Finance, but they were not taken into account.

Months ago, students and teachers mobilized against the measures promoted by the Government and questioned the actions of the Minister of Education, Eduardo Petta, who last May was approved in the Paraguayan Senate a motion of censure for his alleged mismanagement against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Among other issues, Petta was questioned about having refused to create a dialogue table to coordinate actions related to education in the midst of the pandemic.

Another criticism he received was for improvising a program of virtual classes in a country with a slow Internet connection, low technological penetration and access difficulties for a significant segment of the population.
