There are 779 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ecuador’s prisons

Nurses, cooks, among others, have been arrested for trying to enter weapons into the Guayaquil Penitentiary, despite the fact that visits are suspended.

The Commission for Sovereignty, Integration, International Relations and Integral Security of the National Assembly; María Paula Romo, Minister of Government; Héctor Reyna, director of the Guayaquil Penitentiary; Edmundo Moncayo, director of the National Service of Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI) reported the events of the Center for Social Rehabilitation of Men in Guayaquil.

Héctor Reyna Vivar, director of the Guayaquil penitentiary, affirmed that there are 62 guides for 9,000 prisoners in the old Guayaquil Penitentiary. Reyna mentioned that in the operations carried out in this prison, 3 firearms, cell phones and knives have been identified.

“Nurses, cooks, among others, have been arrested for trying to enter weapons into the Guayaquil Penitentiary, despite the fact that visits are suspended,” Reyna said.

Edmundo Moncayo, SNAI director, informed the Commission about the actions aimed at the rehabilitation of persons deprived of liberty.

“It gives me the impression that the institution is not working properly”, questioned the legislator Rene Yandun regarding the SNAI. He agrees that the increase in the number of prison guides, resources and technological capacity is essential to serve the Ecuadorian prison system.

María Paula Romo, after answering various concerns of legislators, stressed that “the problem of rehabilitation centers is structural, in aspects: management model, budget, regulations, realities, guide plan, among others.” (C.D.A.)
