In the geriatric centers of 11 provinces of the country there are around 2,133 confirmed cases of coronavirus and about 100 deaths.
The most affected provinces are Manabí with 1,001 infections; Emeralds with 421; and Pichincha with 135, according to a report by the Ombudsman’s Office.
A massive contagion was registered in a nursing home located in the north of Quito. In this site alone, there were 23 cases confirmed by a brigade of the Ministry of Health led by the epidemiologist Jonathan Reyes.
Health personnel went to the site to assess the residents, after complaints by social networks from several relatives.
David Beltrán, administrator of the geriatric hospital, regretted the contagion and said it would have spread through a nursing assistant who works there.
Julio Mancero’s father died at the age of 84 with the virus in the geriatric San Juan de Dios, also in the capital.
According to the Ombudsman, Freddy Carrión, the elderly have not been a priority for the Government since the health emergency began.
Carrión called on the different areas of the State to direct their efforts to prevent more infections.
