University students and teachers initiate virtual educational strike

The public university will not carry out activities this Friday, in rejection of the economic measures adopted by the Government.

Students, administrative staff and teachers at the public university suspended their activities and asked not to use digital tools as a rejection of the economic measures adopted by the National Government against higher education.

According to a statement issued by the Front in Defense of Public Education, in the field of education, the agenda of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is evident with the budget cut to public universities. This despite the challenge and precautionary suspension of the Constitutional Court.

However, a firm decision by this judicial body is not yet known, so in practice, the cut to higher education continues.

For education workers, the budget cut has violated their most basic labor rights. Teachers have stated that since the health emergency began, they have received their wages more than twenty days late.

They also affirm that the job stability of casual staff is not guaranteed beyond September.

At the Central University of Ecuador, some teachers denounce cuts in their salaries with the blackmail of accepting a downgrade as a requirement for the renewal, for three more months, of their contracts, according to the statement.

With this background, students, administrators and teachers of the public university go on strike.

“Next Friday, July 24, we will suspend the workday and leave the tools quiet, without prejudice to the fact that this measure can in fact be replicated in the coming weeks, until our demands are met,” the statement ends
