The measure is given because they fulfilled 60% of their sentence and with their rehabilitation. In addition, because its exit allows savings to the State and prevents the spread of the coronavirus.
Since the pandemic began, 2171 prisoners have regained their freedom by serving 60% of their sentences and demonstrating that they have been rehabilitated.
Edmundo Moncayo, general director of the National Service of Integral Attention to Adult Persons Deprived of Liberty and Teenagers Violators (Snai), indicated that the departure of these inmates is covered by the Constitution because they have earned points to regain their freedom.
Moncayo said that this represents an economic saving for the State, for example in food there will be a saving of 2 million dollars annually.
In addition, in the face of the health emergency due to the coronavirus and the international call to avoid overcrowding, the procedures were expedited for the departure of those deprived of liberty who met the requirements.
The official explained that this measure prevents overcrowding and the spread of the disease.
Now 830 prisoners are reported to have been infected with coronavirus, 14 have died and more than 500 have recovered.
