Wrong result caused a family to become infected

A doctor was misdiagnosed and her father and son were later infected.

The results of tests that diagnose the coronavirus do not always reflect reality. Many times they can have been misread or generate false negatives and cause people to trust that their health is optimal and inadvertently risk their lives and that of their family.

One of those cases, apparently, happened to a doctor, who in the first days of July entered the emergency area of the hospital where she works, but this time as a patient.

The woman would have presented symptoms related to coronavirus, but after having a PCR test and receiving the negative result through her WhatsApp, everything seemed normal.

She commented that she felt great relief, so she went to her house to share with her parents and her little baby. However, the symptoms did not stop. Three days later she lost her sense of smell and taste – the malaise of the new disease.

“I don’t understand if they misread the test or it was a false negative,” she said.

She had to return to work, but due to the lack of air to breathe, she underwent a tomography scan, which showed that 16% of her lungs were compromised.

After giving him medical rest for three days, the PCR test was repeated and it was positive.

“They said there was a mistake, since on July 2 they already knew that my test confirmed the contagion. Suddenly they are reading wrong, but nobody gave me an explanation about that serious mistake, “she explained.

Due to this negligence, her father and her baby were infected with coronavirus. Her father had some discomfort, while her son developed diarrhea and fever. Fortunately, they are both controlled.

“I am taking care of them and have kept them in good condition; none have required additional oxygen, ”she said, unlike her who uses it at home.

Although the worst is over, she was outraged that wrong results caused her family to catch it.

She said that, unfortunately, hospitals do not carry out the necessary follow-up on doctors who present symptoms and that she is not the only case. She even said that a partner infected her father and she did not resist.

She stated that it is essential that health professionals undergo more frequent testing, since they are in the front line of care.

“We have direct contact with patients, so it is necessary that they perform the tests,” she said.

The health professional said that there are not enough biosecurity teams. For example, those who work in the intensive care unit only receive a mask.

And more than 100 days after the announcement of the first coronavirus case in Ecuador, this doctor assured that some failures in the public system have not been overcome.

According to the doctor, isolation is not carried out on the contacts or fences are applied to the suspects.

At the moment, the capital registers 10 208 cases and hospital services continue to be covered. 131 of the 132 intensive care beds remain occupied.
