In Ecuador 40% of young people between 21 and 30 years old are unemployed after the Covid-19 pandemic

The job cuts in companies, the lack of new jobs and business bankruptcy meant that more young people were left without jobs.

In the world, covid-19 caused a “disproportionate” impact on young people, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO). One in six under the age of 29 is unemployed. Those who kept their jobs had an average reduction of 23% in their working day.

“The pandemic has a triple impact on young people. It not only destroys their jobs, but also their education and training, ”says the ILO report from the end of May 2020.

In Ecuador, the loss of employment during the health emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic affects young people the most.

40% of the 270 638 disaffiliations registered with the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS), between March and June 2020, corresponded to affiliates between 21 and 30 years of age.

This group has 108,233 disaffiliations since the state of emergency began in the country on March 17. After them, people between 31 and 40 years of age are the ones who have left Social Security the most (65,936).

Before the health emergency, youth employment in the country was already facing a difficult crossroads due to the decrease in formal public and private work.

Until December 2019, 37.6% of the unemployed population were people between 15 and 24 years old; meanwhile, those between 25 and 34 years old represented 29.6%, according to the latest data available from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC).

In the new national reality, with projections of a slow economic recovery, starting your own business becomes a more likely path for young people. (C.D.A.)
