Judicial Council urges Finance to return resources to the Judicial Branch

The administrative body of the Judicial Function indicated that the cut made by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in 2019 was USD 12’297,865 and so far in 2020 it has reached USD 7’238,868. Adding both figures, the reduction is around USD 20 million.

In a statement, the Judiciary reported that despite the “drastic cut” the justice services have continued, but that the situation has affected the payment of staff compensation.

The entity even mentioned that during the 2019 fiscal year, the services of 166 judicial servers had to be dispensed with.

On the other hand, this year, the labor relationship with 26 officials was terminated, which further diminished the attention capacity in the law firms.

The Council also warned that the shortage of judges and jurisdictional personnel added to the suspension of activities due to the pandemic as a consequence caused the repression of cases, with the direct affectation to the users who wait for due care and expedited access to guardianship. effective judicial of their rights and interests.

Until May, 804,533 cases were pending, in all jurisdictional instances.

Likewise, between 2019 and so far this year, 734,490 hearings were called, of which 501,326 were held. Each month, on a national scale, an average of 14,444 proceedings of this type are carried out.

The budget cut prevented the execution of adjustments in the Specialized Judicial Units against Violence against Women and Members of the Family Nucleus as foreseen in the National Plan for the Eradication of Gender Violence.

In addition, the maintenance activities of computer equipment, air conditioners, elevators, among others, in the judicial units of Guayaquil, Tena and the National Court of Justice were suspended.

For this reason, the Judicial Council urged Finance to return the previously allocated resources and asked that no further cuts be made.
