Now the military faces from 16 to 30 years in prison.
A guarantee control judge in Colombia issued an assurance measure on Thursday against the seven soldiers involved in the rape of a 12-year-old indigenous girl from the Embera Katío community.
At the indictment hearing, the military was charged with abusive carnal access with an aggravated minor under 14 years of age. The judge ordered that they be held in a military garrison after the subjects pleaded guilty.
The investigation by the Prosecutor General’s Office made it possible to clarify that six of the military committed the atrocious act, which occurred in the Gito Dokabú reservation, Santa Cecilia township, Pueblo Rico municipality, Risaralda department (northwest Bogotá), while the other uniformed officer participated as accomplice.
The girl had been transferred to a Pereira health institution to receive specialized care. The Director of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare, Lina Arbeláez, came to that city on Thursday to accompany the minor and her family.
This case has raised a wave of outrage across the country and numerous personalities and organizations have demanded that it not go unpunished.
