The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Office of the Special Rapporteur on Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights (DESCA) expressed their concern about the difficult situation facing several indigenous communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon that were affected by the oil spill in the Coca and Napo rivers.
The IACHR published a message on its Twitter account to alert about the difficult situation that dozens of indigenous communities are going through due to the lack of attention and state aid. This after the rupture of the bases and pipes of the Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System (SOTE) and the Heavy Crude Pipeline (OCP), on April 07, 2020.

In the same way, the organization recalled that the State must prevent, mitigate and investigate the facts, in addition to regulating and supervising activities that generate significant damage to the environment and the territory of these peoples. Likewise, it must guarantee the intercultural health of peoples and the integrity of their territories.
