The people deprived of liberty belong to the maximum security pavilion and tried to leave using sheets.
The National Police thwarted the attempt to escape eight inmates from the maximum security pavilion of the Social Rehabilitation Center (CRS) in Turi, in Cuenca.
Prisoners tied sheets that they intended to use as ropes to get out of jail.
The uniformed men noticed an unusual movement from one of the sentry boxes, so they gave the alert and the CRS security team immediately intervened.
The inmates had left their cells and forced the protection rails of a window, after having analyzed the place that is next to a vacant lot.
Prisoners serve sentences of between 20 and 35 years in prison for crimes such as murder and rape.
Following the incident, police units reinforced the prison center, which last week was also the target of a riot to demand better health care after the death of an inmate with coronavirus.
Meanwhile, on Thursday they learned about the disarticulation of a criminal gang dedicated to the crime of extortion.
The National Service of Integral Attention to Adult Persons Deprived of Liberty and Teenage Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI) reported that the Cuenca Fire Department, in coordination with the Government of Azuay, carried out fumigation work in external areas and pavilions as part of a strategy to prevent the spread of Covid-19 at that location.
