“The assemblymen would do badly if they interrupt this work, there will be time for us to render our reports,” said the Ecuadorian President.
“Do you believe that it is time for politicking or electoral calculations over this economic stability? I don’t think so, ”said the President of Ecuador, Lenín Moreno, about the three impeachment requests against the Minister of the Economy, Richard Martínez, for several alleged breaches of his duties.
He announced that “the time is not right” for this process.
The President asked the National Assembly to review these impeachment requests, because “Martínez is the head of the team, who successfully started the renegotiation of the debt and he is a fundamental part of obtaining resources from abroad.”
Please, assemblymen, said Moreno, “I call responsibility for the emergency that the country is experiencing so that this group of experts can obtain the resources that Ecuador needs.”
In a subsequent interview with the national network, the president mentioned that the National Assembly has every right to summon the ministers to report on their management, “but this is not the time, this is the time for unity because we need to get ahead with the economic reactivation project ”.
In his opinion, “the assemblymen would do badly by interrupting this work, there will be time for us to render our reports.”
Against Martínez, there are three requests for impeachment. On May 20, 2020, the third request against the minister was formalized for the budget cuts to education. On Monday, May 18, another process was presented for prioritizing the payment of the debt and in July 2019 for failure to pay retirees and failure to comply with the Amazon Law.
The Legislative Administration Council (CAL) has not yet addressed any of the three requests.
