Protesters claimed that they had been attacked and beaten by the National Police

This Friday, May 15, 2020, the judge of the La Florida Judicial Unit ratified the state of innocence of the 4 human rights defenders arbitrarily detained during the peaceful protests in Guayaquil.

This Thursday, May 14, students, teachers, workers and activists held the “We are in mourning and resistance” march, against several issues: unemployment, transparency about the COVID-19 figures, health and the budget cut to universities and polytechnic schools.

The protesters wore masks, gloves and complied with the 3-meter distance between people. They carried banners and a symbolic black coffin. At around 10:00 am, a contingent of riot police began to follow the march and attacks against citizens were registered.

“We were protesting peacefully about all the measures that affect Ecuadorians, keeping the 3 meters away, with all the security measures to avoid coronavirus contagions, and the police attacked us, throwing gas, dispersing and hitting us,” says Leonardo Quiroz. , one of the protesters.

There were 4 people arrested, after the arrival of the Police. They were blamed for the alleged crime of verbal assault during the sit-in. The defense of the police, according to the Coordinator of social organizations, tried to mediate requesting that the defendants apologize publicly. “Our colleagues did not attack anyone. The Police must apologize, “they claimed.

Today, with the judge’s ruling, the 4 activists were released and their state of innocence was ratified.
