Sonnenholzner: Carchi protest is “disproportionate, unnecessary and abusive”

On the second day of demonstrations by Carchi residents, who demand attention from the Government, Vice President Otto Sonnenholzner described this measure as “disproportionate, unnecessary, abusive.” He explained that they will not yield to blackmail or pressure.

Carchi’s Prefect Guillermo Herrera criticized that the Government has not complied with what was offered to the province.

The Vice President regretted this measure and clarified that in Carchi they have achieved “huge agreements” such as the cross-border basket and the elimination of retention for its inhabitants in order to reactivate the economy.

“We will not yield to blackmail and pressure. They believe it is the only province with immediate and important needs. All provinces have them. We must not assume absurd positions that have nothing to do with Ecuador’s development,” he said.

He explained that the Vice Presidency “has been an open-door entity with rational positions, but I cannot sit down to talk with radicals.”

On the VAT reduction, Sonnenholzner said it is unfeasible because they cannot reduce this tax by provinces.
