The organization asks countries to guarantee supplies for health personnel.
The director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa Etienne, reported that deaths from COVID-19 will increase in Latin America in the next three to six weeks.
The official indicated that everything will depend on compliance with the measures to avoid infections and the available resources.
She explained that the health impact of the new coronavirus will not be the same in all Latin American countries, but in late April and early May many will begin to see a greater number of those infected and deceased by the disease.
She warned that in the face of the pandemic some countries will see their health services “overwhelmed” and insisted that everything depends on complying with measures not only for social distancing, but also with sufficient health personnel, hospital beds and intensive care units.
The new coronavirus has caused more than 80,000 deaths and 1.4 million confirmed infections worldwide since the first case was reported in China.
Etienne reiterated that the impact of the pandemic will be “devastating” where health workers are lacking and urged people to be grateful.
She asked countries to guarantee the supply of protective equipment to hospitals and to work in coordination with the private sector.
