Among the victims is the director of a Dialysis Center.
More than 100 patients from eight dialysis centers in Guayas, Los Ríos, Esmeraldas and Manabí died due to lack of dialysis and from coronaviruses. To that list was added Dr. Julio León, director of the Surmedial Dialysis Center, who died from COVID-19.
Cristina Freire, spokesperson for the Dialysis Centers, indicated that the deceased are people who have not been able to perform dialysis properly, three times a week and have also been infected with the virus.
Freire said the virus increases its lethality in people with catastrophic illnesses.
She said that by the end of April there will be more than 600 patients with chronic kidney failure who will have died from not complying with the treatments or from the pandemic.
She stated that the director died from COVID-19, and more than 100 administrative and health employees of these dialysis units have coronavirus.
She commented that hundreds of nurses and doctors in these centers are afraid of getting infected and at least 50% of the staff do not attend work since, due to the lack of payment, they do not have gloves, masks, shoes, gowns, among other basic tools for biosecurity.
She added that the ministries of Health and Finance still owe more than $ 3 million to dialysis centers, a value that corresponds to the payment of the months of July, August and September. Not to mention that there are still another six months of service provided that have not yet been billed.
Meanwhile, the relatives of the dialysis patients asked the authorities to create a commission to take care of this group.
