Guayaquil is the epicenter of the drama of the families of people who died due to COVID-19

The Municipality of Guayaquil stated that it had received 600 requests to carry out the removal of bodies.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought pain to Ecuadorian homes, especially in the city of Guayaquil.

About 25 people, stationed outside the Guasmo Hospital in the south of the city, shouted that they only want the bodies of their loved ones.

They were the relatives of the patients who died last week in that health home. Everyone’s complaints were similar.

A woman claimed the corpse of her mother, a man that of his son and a young man that of his father.

For another citizen, the situation was more painful, when they received the response that their mother’s body could not find.

The only information they had is that the bodies were in the hospital morgue and that due to the country’s health emergency, the procedures were delayed.

The same response was received until this Tuesday by relatives of people who died in their homes. In these cases, delays have been recorded since March 23.

The epicenter of the health crisis remains in the city of Buenos Aires, which until yesterday at 17:00 recorded 1,116 positive cases, out of a total of 2,302 in the entire country. To that figure were added another 499 cases in the rest of the Guayas cantons. Until yesterday, 12 of the 15 mayors of the province reported contagions by coronavirus.

Darwin Jarrín, commander of the Navy and coordinator of the Special Security Zone of Guayas, explained that specialized units were formed for the corpse removal processes.

The bodies that are removed from their homes must be transferred to the Hospital del Guasmo or the Hospital del Monte Sinaí and subsequently, the personnel of the Ministry of Health must prepare the reports to proceed with the burials.

The authorities plan to remove until this Wednesday the bodies that are missing to comply with the corresponding procedures. It is estimated that during March 31 and April 1 115 bodies were collected.

On the other hand, before nearly 600 requests received by the Municipality of Guayaquil for the removal of deceased people from their homes, the entity ordered the delivery of three containers to temporarily refrigerate the bodies.
