The volcanic ash was slightly present in the atmosphere of Cuenca, this Tuesday, March 24.
A fine layer of ash that comes from the Sangay volcano, located in southern Ecuador, in the province of Morona Santiago, covers the cities of Cuenca, Azogues and Macas, this Tuesday, March 24.
The Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School (IG) confirms the eruptive activity of the volcano, due to the visible ash trail that this afternoon crossed the atmosphere of the entire city of Cuenca.
The Sangay volcano began its eruption process on May 7, 2019. It measures 5,230 meters above sea level and is among the most active in Ecuador.
According to the IG, some gas and ash emissions were recorded with a maximum height of 570 meters above the crater level and heading northeast and east. Ashfall is light with no report of lahars.
Monitoring is permanent from the Macas ECU-911, through video surveillance cameras. The zonal administration 6 of the National Risk and Emergency Management Service and the Azuay Red Cross are aware of any changes that may arise.
The recommendations of its health authorities for the population is the use of glasses to protect the eyes, as well as sanitary masks and clothing that covers most of the body.
As a reference of the volcanic activity of the Sangay volcano, on January 28, 2020, the IG recorded the decrease in pyroclastic flows (burning mixture of gases, ash and volcanic rocks) along the southeast flank of the colossus.
