Prosecutor investigates incidents at Guayaquil airport for crime against humanity

The city’s mayor, Cynthia Viteri, assumed her responsibility in this case.

The Guayas Prosecutor’s Office requested the authorities of the Guayaquil Airport Terminal (TAGSA) the videos of the security cameras to verify the actions of the people and institutions that prevented the landing of an airplane.

The provincial prosecutor, Yanina Villagómez, indicated that the investigations initiated are based on the provisions of article 89 (crimes against humanity) of the Organic Comprehensive Criminal Code (COIP), in accordance with articles 112, numeral 2, and 124 of the same legal body; international conventions and norms of International Humanitarian Law.

“Based on the information that was released, such as videos uploaded to social networks and the media, I asked the prosecutors of the Flagrancia unit to start a prior investigation ex officio,” said the Provincial Prosecutor.

The investigation went by lot to the prosecutor John Camposano, of the Specialized Unit for the Investigation of Transnational Organized Crime, who indicated today that he will request the report of the personnel who were on duty the day of the events, the names of the crew and the time scheduled arrival for the aircraft.

The mayor of Guayaquil, Cynthia Viteri, acknowledged being the cause of this fact, through a virtual press conference, on the afternoon of March 18, before it was known that the Prosecutor’s Office would investigate what happened.

In addition, this March 19, Cynthia Viteri, who tested positive for coronavirus, noted that “it was not a mistake!” She even warned that she would do it again: “They want to land planes that come from Europe even if it is with a passenger, I return to getting cars to Guayaquil airport is that simple ”.

The Prosecutor’s Office will request from the Municipal Transit Agency (ATM) the list of uniformed personnel and civilian personnel that was established at the airport and the provisions that were issued for this purpose.
