Municipality of Guayaquil prevented the plane from landing at the José Joaquin de Olmedo Airport

The Ministry of Transport and Public Works rejects the actions of the municipality.

The Guayaquil Aviation authorities, on their Twitter account, released a video in which the Municipality’s personnel are seen breaking into the operations of the José Joaquín de Olmedo Airport, due to the presence of an Iberia airline plane that, apparently, was with passengers.

This situation made the ATM and municipal police personnel uncomfortable, who with cars stood on the runway to prevent the aircraft from maneuvering. This, before the Government, as part of the coronavirus health emergency, put restrictions on flights.

In the morning, the Secretary General of the Presidency, Juan Sebastián Roldán rejected the information that circulated about the fact that the three flights authorized to the Iberia airline will arrive in the country with passengers.

Roldán affirmed that the planes will come empty and that they will rather serve to transport citizens to Europe and added that no flight is authorized to enter Ecuador upon the disposition of the National COE.

He recalled that any Ecuadorian who is outside the country must comply with the quarantine where he is.

Even the Ecuadorian Embassy in Spain, in charge of Cristóbal Fernando Roldán Cobo, stated on social networks that the aircraft will arrive in Quito and Guayaquil to transfer the compatriots to Madrid. The other flights are scheduled for March 20 and 21.

In this context, the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, through a statement, stressed that “despite the decision taken, as the governing body of the country’s multimodal transport and welcoming the resolutions issued by the Emergency Operations Committee (COE) national, to allow the departure of international flights with foreign passengers, the actions developed by the Mayor of Guayaquil, hinder planned air activity within the Health Emergency that the country is experiencing due to COVID-19 ”.

The State portfolio held the municipal body responsible for the lack of emergency flights and those previously authorized to carry foreign passengers to their destinations.

He also rejected any attempt at violence on the international airstrips that the country has.
