Persons deprived of liberty will not receive visits due to the coronavirus

This measure is to prevent the spread of coronavirus in prison centers across the country.

In order to prevent people deprived of liberty from getting covid-19, family visits to social rehabilitation centers were suspended throughout the country, starting this Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

This was confirmed by the general director of the Comprehensive Care Service for Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI), Edmundo Moncayo. He pointed out that they are socializing the plan with people deprived of liberty, so that they accept and see how dangerous it was for them to continue with visits.

For Moncayo, it was urgent to take the decision to protect the health of prisoners and workers, inside the 53 jails, which house 39,743 people, with 34% overcrowding.

The SNAI issued some safety guidelines, such as the delivery of alcohol to all those who enter prison, taking the temperature and collecting information to find out if they have symptoms associated with the coronavirus.

However, the prison guides warned that they were not given masks to carry out their work. Moncayo justified it, because the existing stock was not enough for everyone, since there are no masks on the market. He assured that they are seeing how to solve the problem.

Another of the measures adopted is the reinforcement of the security, to avoid possible problems with the inmates, such as riots or risks of flight, according to the head of the Comprehensive Care Service for Persons Deprived of Liberty.
