China condemns Pelosi’s visit in Taiwan, activates military maneuvers

China today condemned the arrival in Taiwan of Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and activated new military maneuvers around the island in defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs deplored in a statement that the legislator visits Taipei despite Beijing’s opposition, without caring for damage to bilateral ties and putting peace and stability in the region under threat.

He emphasized the action constitutes a serious violation of the One China principle and provisions of the three joint communiqués because Taiwan is an inalienable part of the country and the world has recognized it as such since 1971, by resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly.

He recalled that 181 nations have ties with Beijing under this universal policy and even Washington recognized it when establishing ties in 1979.

China -indicated the Foreign Ministry- opposes the visits to Taiwan of US congressmen and the executive branch is responsible to stop them. It considered Pelosi’s trip a major political provocation, since it implies raising the level of official exchanges with Taiwan and neither China nor its people can accept it.

He recalled this issue is the most sensitive and important of bilateral relations and has now triggered a new round of tensions due to repeated attempts by Taipei and Washington to change status quo.

“No country, no force and no individual should underestimate the firm determination, strong will and ability of the Chinese government and its people to uphold state sovereignty and territorial integrity, and achieve national reunification”, she said.

The Foreign Ministry stressed the Asian giant will proceed with the necessary measures in response to Pelosi’s visit and again blamed the U.S. and Taiwan authorities for taking responsibility for the consequences.

Apart from the official statement, the People’s Liberation Army issued a notice that from 12:00 local time on August 4 to 12:00 on August 7 “it will carry out major military exercises and training activities, including with live fire in the maritime areas around the southern island and its airspace”.

He indicated that for security reasons, passage by sea and air is prohibited.
