Violence continues in Ecuadorian city

Violence continues to take its toll in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s port city, where an emergency state is in force after an explosion that left five dead and more than 12 injured.

Before 24 hours had passed since the measure´s implementation, an armed confrontation between members of criminal gangs ended with at least three deaths.

According to an unofficial version of the authorities, the shootout was due to the fight for territory to control illicit activities.

The trigger for the emergency state was an explosion in the Cristo del Consuelo neighborhood, while the second incident occurred in Flor de Bastión.

Under this period, which will last 30 days, the exercise of freedom of association and assembly, the inviolability of the domicile and the inviolability of correspondence are suspended.

These limitations empower law enforcement officers to prevent and disrupt meetings in public spaces that threaten order and security.

It also allows them to carry out inspections and searches in homes and properties, in order to find storage areas for drugs, weapons and explosives, as well as to dismantle organized crime structures.
