The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) analyzes whether the Ecuadorian State violated the rights of the Tagaeri and Taromename indigenous peoples, who live in the Yasuní area, in the Amazon.
The public hearing began this afternoon in the city of Brasilia. In this hearing, the presumed responsibility of the Ecuadorian State in alleged violations of the rights of indigenous peoples due to projects that would have affected their natural resources and way of life is analyzed.
The Secretary of Communication indicated that delegates from the Government of Ecuador, together with the State Attorney General’s Office, will participate in the public hearing.
“The State is going to make a technical defense and also a conciliatory defense,” he said.
Leonidas Iza, president of CONAIE, is also present at this hearing. The social leader indicated that, on behalf of his movement, he will make the intervention in favor of indigenous rights.
The Court will issue a ruling in the coming months, after hearing all the parties involved
