Ecuador seeks to acquire five thousand doses of vaccines against common smallpox, to reduce the spread of monkeypox, according to the Minister of Health, José Rúales, during a meeting in the Operations and Emergency Committee (COE).
The minister indicated that, if the purchase of the vaccines materializes, it will not be for everyone, since it is not a universal medicine.
The vaccines are for patients who had direct contact with people diagnosed with monkeypox, Rúales said.
In addition, the minister stressed that there are no treatments or vaccines for this infection yet, but because monkeypox and smallpox viruses are genetically similar, smallpox drugs and vaccines are used to counteract smallpox. of the monkey
According to the last report, Ecuador registered 21 cases of monkeypox. The patients are located in the provinces of Pichincha, Guayas, El Oro, Santa Elena, Azuay, Cañar and Los Ríos.
