China’s authorities, press reject US lawmakers’ trip to Taiwan

Chinese authorities and the press on Monday rejected another trip to Taiwan by US lawmakers and accused Washington of seeking confrontation, amid tensions over Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit there.

The Chinese Embassy in the United States reiterated opposition to any official contact with Taipei, warned of a forceful response to this new provocation and considered that the White House was only fueling regional instability.

It blamed the United States for a potential increase in tensions in the Taiwan Strait and called on the Government to demand that legislators are consistent with the One China principle.

CGTN channel also condemned the two-day stay in Taipei of the bipartisan delegation led by Senator Ed Markey and consisted of five other lawmakers.

According to the channel, this proved that Washington is sabotaging peace and justifies more countermeasures from Beijing, such as those implemented after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to the island on August 2 and 3.

The TV station repudiated and described as a terrible mistake that in the last 18 months, the United States approved five arms sales to Taiwan and allowed the visits by three groups of parliamentarians.

Markey and his accompanying delegation arrived in Taipei on an unannounced visit on Sunday, met with Taiwan’s leader Tsai Ing-wen on Monday, and will meet with other government and private sector representatives before wrapping up their stay in a few hours.
