Brazil rejects violence as a political weapon in elections

The president of the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE), Edson Fachin, assured that justice will be intransigent in the face of violence as a political weapon in the elections in Brazil.

“We will not tolerate electoral violence, subtype of political violence. The Electoral Justice will not measure efforts to act, in order to stop violence as a political weapon and face disinformation as a practice of chaos”, Fachin said in a meeting with the Prerrogativas group.

That organization has joined over 100 other groups in conveying their support to the Electoral Justice. It is formed mainly by lawyers, but also by artists, professors and jurists.

Without mentioning the far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro, champion of the attacks on electronic ballot boxes and the Brazilian electoral system, the Minister also warned that “the TSE is not alone, because society does not tolerate electoral denialism”.

For Fachin, “the attack on the electronic ballot boxes as a pretext for wielding anger will not mislead the country. 90 years ago, we created the Electoral Justice so that it would conduct honest elections and Brazil trusts in its Justice”, he said.

He reaffirmed that the court will act rigorously. “Tied to the Constitution and to institutionality, like Homer’s Ulysses, the Electoral Justice is not fascinated by the mermaid song of authoritarianism, it does not shudder at threats and intimidations”, he pointed out.
