Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi today received Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, with whom he discussed the strengthening of ties between the two countries and various international issues, especially the crisis in Ukraine.
During the meeting held in the El Ittihadiya Palace in the capital, a number of issues were discussed, such as the supply to this nation of grains and foodstuffs, as well as the development of the oil sector, presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said in a statement.
According to the official, both sides agreed to strengthen ties through various ongoing joint projects.
In this regard, El Sisi praised the level of cooperation between Cairo and Moscow, and referred specifically to the start of work on the construction of the first nuclear plant to generate electricity that is being built in this country, with Russian technology and financing.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, the President reiterated the importance of prioritizing talks and seeking diplomatic solutions to resolve the war.
He stressed to Lavrov Egypt’s readiness to support talks, whether through a bilateral or multilateral framework.
Lavrov’s visit to Cairo is the first leg of his African tour that includes Ethiopia, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
