The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) on Monday announced that at least 1,325 monckeypox cases have been reported in 14 nations in the Americas.
According to PAQHO, 81% of infections have been so far reported in the United States (53) and Canada (28), showing a relative rise of 77 and 31% in the last seven days, respectively.
Likewise, during this period, Brazil and Peru reported 198 and 500%, respectively.
Plus, PAHO pointed out that, out of the 472 cases with available information on gender and age, 75% are men aged 18 and 44.
On the other hand, out of the 168 cases analyzed on sexual orientation, 94% were identified as men having sex with men and of these, 24% are HIV positive.
This situation prompted WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus to announce a reconvening of the Emergency Committee to assess whether monkeypox is or not an international emergency.
