Greece’s National Public Health Organization on Thursday reported the first death from serious acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in a child, according to official outlets from this capital.
The fatal victim was a 13-month-old child who had been admitted in a private pediatric clinic due to a two-day fever and lethargy, the statement said.
According to this organization, the tests run revealed a liver failure and brain swelling and, despite the efforts of the physicians, the child unfortunately died.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), so far 920 cases of this type of hepatitis have been reported in 33 countries, 45 of which required a liver transplant, and 18 were fatal.
The WHO indicated that there is a constant decline of cases across the world at present.
To date, Greece has reported 11 cases more with symptoms of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children.
These cases did not require a special treatment. They evolved without complications and did not need additional medical care.
